The Baltimore Catechism, No. 2

The Baltimore Catechism or A Catechism of Christian Doctrine, Prepared and Enjoined by Order of the Third Council of Baltimore is the authoritative national catechism for children in the United States of America. It is the first written catechism for Catholics in North America, and the basic Catholic educational text in America from 1885 to the late 1960s.

Many editions cover annotations or other alterations, in compliance to a personal copyright by Bishop John Lancaster Spalding. The authorized text must have the same contents as that of the original catechism, by adding maps, glossaries or definitions printers could copyright and sell it in their own edition of the catechism. The Baltimore Catechism is still in use in almost all Catholic schools although some schools removed their catechism education, it remained in use in other Catholic schools.

The Baltimore Catechism No. 2 contained the 37 lessons of the fundamentals of the Catholic Faith good for educating sixth to ninth grade students and those persons anticipating and getting ready for Confirmation.

The Catechism text consists prayers and hymns such as The Lord’s Prayer, The Angelical Salutation, The Apostles’ Creed, The Confiteor, An Act of Faith, An Act of Hope, An Act of Love, An Act of Contrition, The Blessing Before Meals, Grace After Meals, The Manner in which a Lay Person is to Baptize in case of Necessity, and Catechism.

There are lessons and questions and answers about God, man, and all his creations such as the creation of the world, that God is the Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things, the creation of man, what man is composed of. It also tackles of the reason why God made people, the importance of soul rather than a man’s body, the teachings of the Church, the infinity of God, that he has no beginning and has no end, that God is perfect and is present everywhere watching over His people.
