The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin – A Great Man’s Memoirs Presented in Excellent Detail

Divided in four parts, the accounts of Benjamin Franklin’s life, as written down by himself, are considered by many to be one of the best works of early American literature ever produced.

Remaining unpublished during Franklin’s lifetime, the autobiography has received widespread praise afterwards, both for its remarkable historic value and for its literary qualities – some experts even going so far as to say that Franklin’s Autobiography is not just one of the first American literary works to be taken seriously by the Europeans, but also one of the very best autobiographies written in history.

The book itself is more or less a form of long letter that Franklin wrote initially to his son William, in 1771, attempting to provide him with a more detailed summary of his life, so that he could learn as much as possible from it. In the summer of that year, Benjamin Franklin took a week away from his work and duties to start working on the first pages of his autobiography.

The four parts that combine to make up The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin are defined to touch upon specific aspects and periods of his life. In the first part, Franklin talks about his childhood, the influence that his mother, uncles and grandfather had on his upbringing, or how he began work as the apprentice of his brother, James Franklin.

While parts two and four are shorter, being influenced by the Revolutionary War and Franklin’s untimely death, the third part offers considerable detail about the author’s accomplishments in his later life, including his publishing of Poor Richard’s Almanac, his various inventions – including his experiments with electricity – and of course, his numerous and highly distinguished successes in the political arena.
