Melancholy is one of the four temperaments which matched the four humours. The four temperaments include sanguine or enthusiastic, active, and social; choleric or short-tempered, fast, and irritable; melancholic or analytical, wise, and quiet; and phlegmatic or relaxed and peaceful. The four humours are blood, which is believed to be produced by the liver; yellow bile, thought to be produced by aggression and anger; black bile, was believed that its excess caused depression, melancholia, a Greek word, which means black bile; phlegm, thought to be associated with indifference or lack of interest.

Depression is a state of low mood and displeasure to activities that affects a person’s way of thinking, attitude, perceptions, and a sensibility. People with depression can feel unhappy, anxious, hopeless, worthless, irritable, or restless. Losing interest of their usual activities, does not want to eat or stress eating, insomnia or oversleeping, low energy, and poor health.

What causes melancholy might be, in relation to depression,like,bereavement,rejection,verbal abuse,physical abuse,sexual abuse, and unfair parental attention to siblings. Childhood physical or sexual abuse can cause phobia or trauma, which is hard to restore.
