Description

Sir Alfred Edward East was an English artist. He was the president of the Royal Society of British Artists from 1906 to 1913. His inspirations include painting from nature such as trees, skies, grass, view, area, material, hue, layout, and design. These subjects are filled with unique oil painting tips and lessons by the master landscape artist himself.

Oil painting is the method of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. Drying oils consist of linseed oil, poppy seed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. The variation of oil reveal a range of effects to the oil paint, for instance the amount of yellowing or drying time. Oil paint was first used by Indian and Chinese artists for Buddhist paintings. Oil painting was gradually practiced since then.

East was able to excellently grasp the details of trees, its scenery, the leaves scattered in its branches, painting sceneries such as lakes mostly with trees on the sides. He quoted, “If we look at a photograph, the edges of the trees do not give you the feeling that the tree is a living thing, they are marked with hard precision against the light, like a solid building, and yet at the same time if we see them in Nature we hear the whisper of their leaves and know that they live and breathe. To express that is greater truth than the camera can reveal, and a higher form of realism.”

East studied at Glasgow School of Art and his captivating paintings show the prestige of the Barbizon school. The Art of Landscape Painting in Oil Colour was published in 1906. He shared his works at art galleries at the Fine Art Society. He made a statement, “The greatest errors in landscape painting are to be found – contradictory as it may appear – not so much in the matter of technique as in the painter’s attitude toward Nature.”
