Her life experience is likely part of what inspired the bold and very real Sara Lee Kennedy in The Amazing Interlude. This strong and quite remarkable woman has become one of the most inspiring female characters of WWI literature, taking control of a challenging and very real plot that puts her intelligence, resilience and emotional strength to the test.

The story is initially set in Pennsylvania, where Sara is set to marry, and her life is practically planned out in its entirety by the social conventions of the time. Inspired to do more to help the front lines, however – as war raged on in Europe – Sara defies the mores of her community, and leaves for Europe, but not before making a solemn promise to return and marry.

Although this isn’t necessarily considered to be Mary Roberts Rinehart’s most prolific novel, it is undoubtedly among the most well-received-both during her time, and in the modern days to come.
