Description

Washington Irving’s The Alhambra is a collection of essays, verbal sketches, and tales. While taking down some content of the book, Irving stayed at the Alhambra palace where he was inspired in doing so. Irving stayed during the spring and summer at the ancient Moorish palace in Granada, Spain, in which he described as “one of the most remarkable, romantic, and delicious spots in the world.” The Alhambra contains Spanish and Moorish history and folk lore as the author’s personal experience with the locality. He added, defining it as “a most picturesque and beautiful city, situated in one of the loveliest landscapes that I have ever seen.” He was amazed and filled with awe when he saw how wonderful and astonishing the whole palace was. He could not believe that this kind of attractions are not illusory. He was sure that not only him had this great experience.

He immediately asked permission for the access and ingress of the Alhambra Palace from the former governor of such historical palace as well as the archbishop of Granada, which was fully granted because of Irving’s status quo. He was assisted by an elder 35-year-old guide whose name was Mateo Ximenes. Irving was very much excited and thrilled by his experience to write stories about the Alhambra. He filled his writing materials like notebooks and journals with notebooks and journals with sketches, outline, details, illustrations, observations, and descriptions, although he still has doubts if he will ever do equity or fairness with his work.

He wrote, “How unworthy is my scribblings of the place.” Though he was quite dismayed, he given a recognition plaque in Spanish at the Alhambra which reads, “Washington Irving wrote his Tales of Alhambra in these rooms in 1829.” The Alhambra was represented and reintroduced to Western countries.
