The novel opens as Newland Archer, a lawyer and member of New York’s elite upper class, is newly engaged to the beautiful and seemingly innocent May Welland. Archer is content and prepared for a life of calm domesticity when May’s cousin, the alluring Countess Ellen Olenska, disrupts his quiet existence. Archer is about to become married just as Ellen becomes separated from her philandering husband, a count in Poland. Ellen makes quite a splash upon her entrance into New York society. Her immodest dress and manner do nothing to quell the scandal that has followed her across the ocean; rumors of her possible infidelity circulate among her family and would-be friends.

Archer, accustomed to well-mannered and well-bred women like May, is beguiled by Ellen and her defiance of societal conventions. As she opens his eyes to the hypocrisy of their shared social class, they find themselves mutually drawn to one another. The more Archer becomes entangled with Ellen, the more he views his future wife as a product of a society that strips women of distinctive character. He becomes increasingly dissatisfied with May’s naivety and lack of opinion. However, as Archer and Ellen make decisions regarding everyone’s future, even Archer, with his newfound sense of enlightenment, cannot foretell what will happen next.

Wharton’s introspective novel is an important look at a dying, gilded age, where the rewards to those who adhered to the rules of a rigid upper class were easily outdone by the extreme punishments to those who defied them.
