Lightfoot has lots of friends in the forest – Paddy the Beaver, Peter Rabbit and many others help Lightfoot escape his predators and they everything they can to keep him from harm.

The story is as much about the natural environment as it is about powerful emotions. It is told in first person singular by the deer, so the governing point of view is that of a hunted animal. He experiences fear and joy, worry and happiness and many other emotions, depicting all of them very realistically. The story ends well, of course – Lightfoot not only escapes the hunters, but he also finds a partner and they both look forward to spending the rest of their life in safety and happiness.

The adventures of Lightfoot the Deer, as well as the other animal stories by Burgess, were written with a double goal: to entertain young readers and to teach them about nature. The fable fulfills both goals marvelously: whether the stories are read out loud by the parents or the children are old enough to read the story themselves, the adventures of this beautiful, resourceful and very brave deer will surely keep the children’s attention engaged. Who knows, maybe they will develop an interest for nature and the inhabitants of forests as well.
