Written and first published in 1915, The Adventures of Grandfather Frog is one of the best animal stories from the pen of Thornton W. Burgess – funny, educative, eventful and exciting, delighting children and parents for over a hundred years.

It is never too late to set off and see the world – Grandfather Frog is living proof of that. Having spent all his life in the Green Forest, Grandfather Frog decides that it is time to travel outside the Forest. The story is mainly, but not entirely made up by the old frog’s plans for traveling – the reader finds out a lot about the other inhabitants of the forest as well, about Frog’s friends and his predators alike. Some of these characters help Frog, others pursue him, but all of them are true to their animal nature and all of them have human character traits as well, teaching kids about animals just as much as about humans in an understanding and often very humorous way.

The story of his journey is presented in an episodic manner, each episode being a little stand-alone story that is enjoyable in its own. The chapters in the book are maximum five pages long, suiting the attention span of kids of various ages (younger kids can read one chapter at a time, while older children, who can read fluently, can read several chapters or even the entire book in one go).

The character of Grandfather Frog appears in almost every Burgess fable, from the first volume entitled Old Mother West Wind published in 1910. Besides this book about is Adventures, he is the protagonist in many other stories as well – children who like him in this story will also enjoy Grandfather Frog Stays in the Smiling Pool, Grandfather Frog Gets a Ride, or Grandfather Frog Fools Farmer Brown’s Boy.
