Description

The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex is a book of science written by the English naturalist Charles Darwin, which was first printed in 1871, applying the evolutionary theory to human evolution, and discusses his theory of sexual selection, a concept of biological adaptation dissimilar yet related with natural selection. The text includes several matters, such as evolutionary psychology, evolutionary ethics, distinctions between human races, distinctions between sexes, the important role of women in mate selection, and the relevance of the evolutionary theory to the community.

The first part is the evolution of man and his physical traits, Darwin presented the issue on “… whether man, like every other species, is descended from some pre-existing form, secondly, the manner of his development, and thirdly, the value of the differences between the so-called races of man.”

Darwin further explained that humans are similar with some species of animals. He studies the anatomical similarities, converging on body structure, embryology, and the undeveloped organs that apparently were beneficial in one of man’s earlier structures.

Then he narrates the evolution of mental traits, in accordance with Francis Galton and his theory, Darwin alleged that human personality and mental attributes are naturally acquired in a similar manner as physical traits, and details against the distinction of mind and body for the rationales of the theory of evolution. He explains that humans have the same mental capabilities in other animals, particularly on apes, monkeys and dogs for his parallels for emotions, intelligence, beliefs, and compassion.
