The Autobiography of Charles Darwin

The Autobiography of Charles Darwin is an autobiographical account written by the British environmentalist himself Charles Darwin.

Darwin wrote the book, which was entitled Recollections of the Development of my Mind and Character, intended for his family. He affirms that he began drafting it around May 28, 1876 and had completed it by August 3 of the same year.

The work was published in 1887, five years following his death, by John Murray as a portion of The life and letters of Charles Darwin, containing a chapter on his autobiography. The content in Life and Letters was edited by Francis Darwin, the son of Darwin, who omitted some passages on his father’s analytical insights of God and religion.

The neglected passages were afterwards restated by Nora Barlow, Darwin’s granddaughter in a 1958 edition in recalling the 100th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species. This edition was printed in London by Collins bearing the title of The Autobiography of Charles Darwin 1809-1882. With the passages which were previously written by Darwin. The Autobiography was edited and contains an appendix and notes by Nora Barlow, his granddaughter.

Charles Robert Darwin was a naturalist, geologist and biologist originally from Britain. He is most famous for his study on the science of evolution. He discussed that all breathing species came from common ancestors. Alfred Russel Wallace joined Darwin in establishing his scientific theory that the study on the science of evolution is a process distinguished as natural selection, where the test for survival has the same weight as the artificial selection evident in selective breeding.

The theory of evolution was released with clear conviction in Darwin’s 1859 text On the Origin of Species, surmounting scientific negative responses of the original hypothesis on the evolution of species.
