Description

Persuasion by the famous author Jane Austen tells the story of a love that is not only put to the test of time, but that also has to face the prejudice and hypocrisy of the others. The novel is one of Austen’s maturity creations, being known as the last finished work of the author.

The heroin, Anne Elliot, is the second daughter of Sir Walter Elliot, a baronet who is very aware and proud of his rank and position in society, and who does not hesitate to sacrifice Anne’s happiness, if this allows him to climb on the social ladder in any way.

In fact, this was the case 9 years before the opening of the novel, when he persuaded his daughter to break off her engagement, because her fiancé, the clever, ambitious and good looking Navy officer, Frederick Wentworth, came from a family with an inferior social status, having reduced financial means and no prospects of getting rich quickly.

However, during the Napoleonic wars, Wentworth succeeds in making a reputation as one of the bravest naval officers and he also gains a considerable fortune, mainly from the rewards he gets for capturing French battleships.

In order to cope with his excessive expenses, Sir Walter, Anne’s father, moves from Kellynch Hall, the family’s estate, renting it to Admiral Croft and his wife, who are no other than Wentworth’s brother-in-law and sister. As he comes to live with them in their new residence, he also meets Anne, his former fiancée.

Do the two protagonists still have feelings for each other or do they comply and live their lives according to the desires of those around them?

How quick come the reasons for approving what we like.
