Description

The memory of Vera is embedded in the house where Everard Wemyss lives with his new wife, the quiet, sensitive and innocent Lucy. While Wemyss used to be extremely kind, considerate and understanding to his new wife, in time, his true face was revealed to the young and impressionable Lucy: as a tyrant whose emotional instability and difficult demeanor slowly began to engulf her life and make her feel trapped in a web of hopelessness.

Vera is one of Elizabeth von Arnim’s most successful novels. The book focuses on a romance that at first seemed quite innocent and even sweet in some ways, especially pertaining to how Wemyss helped Lucy, apparently out of compassion, during her time of need. However, in time, the romance is warped, and Vera’s memory begins to push the cruel and unforgiving Wemyss closer and closer to the point of no return. Hope still exists for Lucy, in the meantime, however, her future looks quite grim.

Despite the somewhat darker storyline, von Arnim still manages to create a lighthearted atmosphere, and carefully portrays events without seeking to traumatize her readers in any way. Tackling the topic of abusive relationships, however, is never easy, and it takes all of the author’s skills and talents to craft a story that remains balanced and quite ideally entertaining from start to finish.

Not without a dose of mystery and intrigue, Vera even presents passages of a dark comical tone that become bittersweet as the story unfolds, and readers discover the true intentions behind Wemyss’ plans. With believable characters who present a great deal of depth, and a psychological arc that is masterfully woven into the plot line through means that only the most skilled authors are capable of, Vera grows with each page into a novel that generations of readers have greatly enjoyed and continue to love to this day.
