Quo Vadis: The Birth of Christianity Told Through a Remarkable Story

It has been more than 120 years since this remarkable book was written, and became somewhat of a myth when compared with other historical fiction novels. Quo Vadis was written by Henryk Sienkiewicz at the end of the 19th century, and is considered today as one of the best written, well-researched and detailed books depicting the dawn of Christianity at the time of the reign of Emperor Nero of Rome.

Much of the action in the book revolves around Nero himself. Sienkiewicz depicts the Roman Emperor as objectively as possible, based on true accounts of his life – including the alleged burning of Rome and the torture of Christian captives. The book also focuses on the people surrounding Nero, such as the noble Petronius, a courtier who always attempts to use his influence in order to alleviate the suffering of those around him, even if he does not agree with the new teachings brought by Christians, and would never become a Christian himself.

The novel is quite graphic and descriptive, aiming to present events as realistically as possible, and never attempting to show the Romans or Christians separately, in a more favorable light than one another. The story evolves gradually and at a pace that allows readers to familiarize themselves with the unusual, harsh world that has led to the birth of the Christian faith. It provides us with a glimpse of the barbaric, predominantly lawless reality that the leadership of men like Nero could lead to in a society where the value of those in power was favored above all else.
