Juliet was the adopted daughter of Sir Arthur Byrne. Her father was ill. He worked in a little consulate that overlooked the Black Sea. He was granted a sick leave. He has doubts and confusion about his family’s future. Although he was sick, he pretended to be in good health. He does not want to be sympathized for his health condition. He thought that maybe he has a very serious illness. He became troubled and depressed.

He went to see his doctor in London. He had a successful operation and immediately got well. The doctor advises him to take a dip in the waters. He reluctantly obeyed. There he met a sophisticated and lovely widow, Lena Meredith. His husband was accidentally killed within a few months after their marriage. Byrne was attracted to her. She always carries a little baby with her named Juliet, wherever she goes. Byrne and Meredith were constantly dating, though she has a baby, he is willing to marry her and accept her baby as his own. Meredith is so delighted upon knowing this.

They went happily to the post in the Black Sea, where they live nearby. They moved from one port to another. Years passed and Juliet has grown up. Their happy days ended when suddenly her mother died because of pneumonia. Byrne’s heart shattered and isolated himself from everyone but not with Juliet.

Juliet came to know that Byrne was not her father. But Byrne assured her that she is always welcome in his home. She felt loved and thought that her stepfather really cared for her.
