Before Anne MacLanahan Grenfell arrived in Newfoundland, she could scarcely have imagined a more unusual, yet also hospitable land. In a country that apparently had “no afternoons,” it seemed difficult to adjust to the cold, even in the summer. She also felt that, even though the people were extremely close, and everyone knew everyone else, they were also quite baffled at her own accent and, what they may have considered to be a rather unusual demeanor.

Le Petit Nord is Anne MacLanahan’s account of her year spent as a missionary working in Newfoundland and Labrador. Her collection of letters comprises a full year of her journey into the farthest regions of Canada, and describes her interaction with the locals, as well as the many activities, impressions and lessons associated with the time she had spent at a local orphanage.

Agreeing to help out at the orphanage, she gradually discovers the wonders, challenges and hardwork she signed up for are definitely not what she expected. At the same time, however, the satisfaction of working with children, as well as that of being a guide and teacher, took over her heart, and allowed her to not only endure, but welcome the hardships and challenges of this strange new land with curiosity and enthusiasm.

Filled with details and accounts of events that would make historians curious, as well as many lessons and mentions from the Scriptures that Anne weaves into her letters in a fun and carefree fashion, the writings themselves are easy to follow, extremely interesting, and quite droll on occasion.

Anne MacLanahan’s playful and quite skilled ability to paint a clear and detailed picture of her life in Newfoundland and Labrador is more than inspiring.
