Description

Herbert George Jenkins is known mainly for being the publisher of P.G. Wodehouse’s remarkable works, through his own publishing company, Herbert Jenkins Lrd. However, aside from this significant detail associated with his life, it can also be said that Jenkins was a skilled writer of comedy himself.

Aside from popular works and stories, such as The Life of George Borrow, the Michael Sage series and beautifully written stories such as The Rain-Girl: A Romance of Today, Jenkins’ single most successful and popular stories are those based on Bindle – his most well-known fictional character, considered a real classic today.

According to T.P. O’Connor, Bindle is “the greatest Cockney that has come into being through a medium of literature since Dickens wrote Pickwick Papers.” Although he initially appeared only occasionally in a few other humorous stories focusing on the drama of life at work, Bindle was quickly “promoted” to a book focused entirely on him, particularly due do popular demand.

Bindle introduces us to Joseph Bindle, a furniture remover who later becomes a porter at Fulham Square Mansions. The story is characterized by Jenkins’ distinctive humor manifesting itself both through the droll situations – sometimes bordering on ridiculously funny – and through the traits of the characters themselves, most especially Mr. Bindle.

The story is essentially made up of a series of short but remarkably funny episodes. We are introduced to Mr. Hearty, whom Bindle helps with his advertising problems, Lady Knob Kerrick, whose drawing room was unexpectedly transformed into a temporary lodging area for soldiers, and characters as diverse and interesting as Ginger,Dick Little or “Guggers.”
