The Adventures of a Grain of Dust, written by Hallam Hawksworth, is a wonderful children’s story that offers the reader so many interesting pieces of scientific information that even adults can learn a lot from the book.

The story depicts what the title promises: the journey of a grain of dust that moves around among plants, insects and other animals and then tells about how each of these plants and animals contributes to the success of the farmer’s efforts to get his crops growing. The journey takes the tiny grain of dust outside the farm and around the world, too, making the travelogue even more interesting. The scientific facts are presented in great style in the book – there is never too much or too little information, the little grain raises the right question at the right time and he also provides the right answers.

The Adventures of a Grain of Dust is not Hawksworth’s only book that features a strange protagonist and sends that hero on a journey. The tiny piece of dust, whose adventures were first published in 1922, had a larger role model – Hawksworth wrote and published The Strange Adventures of a Pebble in 1921. Both books enjoyed tremendous success and not only because they were both excellently written and exciting, but also due to the great illustrations that accompanied the stories.

In 1926, Hawksworth decided to replace his inanimate protagonists with living ones and he created The Clever Little People with Six Legs, a book that presented the fascinating world of ants to the reader, a world of insects that live in an intricate and sophisticated social structure similar to ours and a world in which each and every member of the society has its own, well-defined role and performs well-defined tasks serving the interests of the entire society.
