The Annals was the author’s final work during the time of Augustus Caesar’s death in AD. 14. Tacitus has written 16 books, but books 7, 8, 9, 10 and portions of books 5, 6, 11, and 16 are lost. Book 6 concluded with the death of Tiberius and books 7 to 12 probably narrates the rulings of Caligula and Claudius. The book covers the prevalence of Nero until his death in June 68. Half of the book 16 is lost, concluded with the occurrences of the year AD 66.

It is unclear as to whether Tacitus accomplished some of his writings or whether he completed some other works that he supposed to complete, but he died before finishing his work on histories of Nerva and Trajan, the records on the writings on Augustus Caesar and the history of the Roman Empire was not recovered. Publius Cornelius Tacitus was a politician (senator) and a historian of the Roman Empire, the post Roman Republic of the ancient civilization of Rome, headed by emperors and they took hold of many of territories around the Mediterranean Sea in Europe, Africa, and Asia. The city of Rome was the biggest city in the world.The remaining parts of his two extensive works, The Annals and The Histories, review the rulings of Tiberius, Claudius, Nero, who were Roman emperors during the period, and those in the year of the four emperors AD. 69 who reigned in succession namely, Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian. The Roman Empire history from Augustus Caesar’s death were detailed in the two writings. His death to the period of the First Jewish-Roman War in AD 70. Augustus established the Roman Principate and was the first emperor, ruling the Roman Empire from 27 BC to AD 14. He died at age 75. There was a hearsay that Livia, his wife, poisoned him, though there was no proof. he was succeeded as Emperor by Tiberius, his former son-in-law.
