Description

This is a vigorous, tough and somersault, direct report of the primary California gold rush years 1851-1854 by a Scottish adventurer and craftsman J. D. Borthwick. The first edition, was known as Three Years in California. Republications have applied the much explanatory title The Gold Hunters.

John David Borthwick was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, to a preeminent doctor, was an itinerant Scottish journalist and writer who studied both a gentleman’s and artist’s instruction. Then, a bequest was given upon him, and at the age of 21, he traveled to explore the world. It is also conjectured that he was among the sons of Peter Borthwick, a successor of Baron Borthwick, but there is no proof to verify this assertion.

John went to Canada, south to New Orleans, and later northwards as much as New York, where he settled for an indefinite time, then he was hit with the golden malaise, and immediately journeyed to California. He traversed the Isthmus of Panama at Chagres on a little sailing boat from Panama City, where he remained until spring, arriving in San Francisco in the summer. He made a trip in gold rush California , readily spotting and drawing all racial groups he greeted.

He later departed for Nicaragua en route to the Atlantic coast line, next to Australia, and lastly to Scotland passing through Panama. John went back to Edinburgh and started preparing his remarks for printing, and his sketches were flaunted in many galleries, such as the Royal Academy.

He later wrote items from his California trips in Harper’s Weekly, in California Magazine, and the memories of his undertakings in a volume titled Three Years in California. This provides reports on mining procedures, private collaborations, transportation, crime, vacations, hotels and restaurants, diversion of the societal life of the period and the expansion of California.
