He was widely educated and became a lawyer in Illinois, a Whig Party leader, and was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. He took part in a series of highly publicized debates with his rival, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, Lincoln was against slavery, but he was not elected at the United States Senate. He regained confidence when he was elected president in 1860 although the Southern citizens gave him little support, he got a majority of supporters from the North which led to his victory.
