Spy Proof America!, written by J. Francis Logan, is a passionate piece of writing dating back to the end of World War I (it was first published in July, 1917) and dealing with the dangers of the infiltration of foreign spies and the necessity to find and eliminate those spies.

The basic premise of Logan’s short, but all the more intense book is that, at the time of writing, the United States “enjoyed” a huge number of enemy spies. Logan urges the establishment of a civilian organization, a body of professionals that he called the Voluntary Secret Service or the V.S.S, to root out these spies. Logan was convinced that the number of foreign spies on US territory when he wrote his book reached a quarter of a million, a huge crowd that followed the objective of ruining America by means of criminal activities. However, such disruption was not the only objective of these foreign spies – they were also striving to obtain advancement and to achieve positions that would allow them to dictate.

In the book, Logan proposed a solution to this serious problem: the establishment of a counter-espionage body that numbers half a million members, men and women, tried, true and driven by patriotism, to help the work of the world’s best and most professional Secret Service, tracking down foreign spies. The author admitted that the task was not easy – he considered spies to be highly cultivated men and women and they had so many tricks available that finding them required equal, if not superior skill and knowledge. In his book, Logan dedicated separate chapters to tell members of various professions such as butchers, meat packers, employees in drug stores, doctors, aviators, farmers, workers in oil wells, on railroads and many others how to protect themselves against attacks by enemy spies. The book ends in an equally passionate note, with Logan encouraging the fight against enemy infiltrators.
