The story of Charles Ball is factual, and told in a simple way. It is purely a presentation of his life working as a slave in the Southern States of the Union which is a description of negro slavery in the “model Republic.”

Charles Ball was an African-American slave from Maryland, most popular for his narrative as a fugitive slave, The Life and Adventures of Charles Ball in 1837. Charles Ball dwelled in Calvert county, Maryland, up until around the age of 4. When his mother died in the 1780s, Charles and his three siblings were all sold to several purchasers.

He was sold to a cotton planter in South Carolina, got separated from his wife and children who stayed in Maryland. He attempted countless escapes but he was still recaptured, he wrote his autobiography with the aid of the American attorney Isaac Fisher. Charles Ball got married and had children and he was sold to a Georgia merchant without warning and was once again got detached from his family. He sooner escaped from the hands of slavery and lived in Pennsylvania where he wrote his personal memoirs.

The biographical memoir of Charles Ball is an enthralling and genuine narration of the lives of the slaves and their owners, which the author illustrates as “one long waste, barren desert, of cheerless, hopeless, lifeless slavery; to be varied only by the pangs of hunger, and the stings of the lash”.
