Tecumseh was a great leader of the Shawnee and a huge tribal confederacy that fought America in the War of 1812. He was a folk hero commemorated by several Canadians for defending their country.

In the first chapter of the account, The Boyhood of Tecumseh, it narrates the three Indian persons who remained to be outstanding in the history of Canada, these were Pontiac, Brant, and Tecumseh. The Ottawa chief Pontiac was the comrade of the French, and, when the latter was defeated, he planned and battled to exonerate the British from their country. Brant, the Mohawk, agreed with the king to fight against the Americans in the War of Independence, and eventually brought his subjugated people to Canada that they may have houses in Britain. Tecumseh was conquered by the British in the War of 1812 and rendered service to them. While Pontiac battled against the French and Brant and Tecumseh against the British, their aim was to win the war for their countrymen and only for this reason that they fought harder.

Tecumseh came from the Shawnees, an active and warlike tribe of Algonquian stock. The Algonquins, whose tribal areas were dispersed from Labrador to the Rockies and from Hudson Bay to North Carolina, assumed that a divine being led each of the four small arrows of the compass. Shawan was the sentinel spirit of the South; and, as the tribe to which Tecumseh belonged previously resided south of the other tribes, its members were called as Shawanoes, or Shawnees or Southerners.
