Description

Child Life in Colonial Days is a story book of the experiences of old childhood life which are detailed with an entirely innocent and sincere as well as being simple. Not only from the manners of a child, but also from the manners of his parents, relatives, and friends. The accounts were made from a compassionate and doting curiosity, and not from other unrelated interests. There was no thorough search made for intentions nor importance, but the fact that they give love and care in the family are what made this book a fascinating story to read.

The child life stories include such babyhood, their apparels, children going to schools and their life there, the children’s women teachers and scholastic girls, children’s books used in school, learning how to read and write, and many other interesting and educating fun ways of learning in being a child during the colonial times.

Alice Morse Earle was an American historian and writer and was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. Her real name is Mary Alice to her parents Edwin Morse and Abby Mason Clary Morse. She got married to Henry Earle of New York City, altering her name from Mary Alice Morse to Alice Morse Earle. Her works, concentrated mainly on little information about behavioral sciences but not on bigger informative details, which are unimportant for present day social historians. She wrote several books on American colony particularly the New England region like Curious Punishments of Bygone Days.

She was among the passengers of the RMS Republic when the ship collided with the SS Florida because of a dark and heavy fog. In the event of rescuing the passengers, Alice fell down into the ocean and she almost drowned. Her near drowning from the unsuccessful travel to Egypt deteriorated her health which caused her death two years after, in Hempstead, Long Island.
