Description

Alexander Hamilton and Charles A. Conant (1861 – 1915) had much in common both as men and as important social and economic figures, despite the former having a much more impressive reputation. Like Hamilton, Conant served the United States in a time of war, and was also an accomplished banker, being sent to the Philippines to investigate coinage and banking there, and later serving as treasurer of the Morton Trust Company in New York.

Charles Conant wrote this extensive biographical work about Hamilton entitled Alexander Hamilton, managing to present a more complete portrait of the famed political figure. Conant offers an overall general introduction about Hamilton’s life and accomplishments, including his early life in the West Indies, his education at Columbia University and King’s College, and his increasing role played in the American revolutionary movement.

Alexander Hamilton was one of the most distinguished figures who took part in the Revolutionary War and had a major impact on the development of the United States as a nation. He was one of the authors of the well-known Federalist Papers, which was written together with James Madison and John Jay. The Papers, as well as Hamilton as a public figure, had a major impact on supporting the ratification of the U.S. Constitution.

In Conant’s book we also find out a great deal about Hamilton’s work as George Washington’s secretary of the Treasury and his extensive arguments with Thomas Jefferson, as well as several other controversies. Hamilton supported an ideally centralized government, and had many views that were considered to be questionable with regards to how the nation could be brought into financial stability.

Even though the book isn’t long, the amount of information covered is extensive. Yet Charles Conant still manages to turn it into an extremely appealing and well-organized document that still reads well more than a century after it was written.
