Growth of the Soil – A Curious and Deeply Meaningful Book You Will Learn to Love

Knut Hamsun has been one of the few writers who were able to use their works to portray majestic worlds within the lives of his characters seemingly without giving them any living emotions or qualities that would make them look and feel more human. Despite keeping his character’s emotions from us, Hamsun manages to captivate through Growth of the Soil by adding more dimensions to his characters’ personalities, while ensuring that the most enigmatic characters will keep you on your toes.

As you progress through the read, you will find both the characters and the events they take part in to evolve in their complexity. We start out with Isak building his new home in the Norwegian wilderness, and before long, a host of diverse settlers arrive, each with their own unique traits and aspirations.

These new arrivals eventually make for a rich and diverse storyline in which ordinary officials are likened to divinities, and people seldom show the true nature of their characters, so that the reader has to really look deep to find the underlying meanings and symbols that govern this outstanding and somewhat eccentric novel.

From gradually evolving characters such as Oline, to Geissler, who is one of the least defined and most mysterious characters of the novel, sometimes Hamsun talking about him as if he was some form of a divine man who could achieve anything.

The power of the land and of the people seem to be a central theme in Hamsun’s book, and with plenty of subtle metaphors and meaningful innuendos to explore, made all the more cryptic and sometimes quite inspiring by Hamsun’s vague, yet deep remarks, Growth of the Soil is one book that you’ll have to read multiple times before you can truly grasp the full extent of its many meaningful literary dimensions.
