Description

The dog whose life we witness is taken from her precocious mother when just a little pup. But our heroine, the pooch named Aileen Mauvoureen, was taught by her mother, who often attended Sunday school with the masters, to live for the good of others. That was a dog’s place in life.

Aileen was given a good home with everything she could want. The home was grand, the people were kind to her, and she never wanted for food. The family loved our heroine, and always took good care of her. Aileen considered looking after the baby of the master’s family to be her main responsibility. And she watched over the little one all the time.

Aileen’s life was made complete when she had a puppy of her own, and wasn’t forced to give it up as she was. However, life was not to be always perfect. Fire struck the house. Aileen got the baby out of the house in time, only to be punished for messing with the baby. The truth was discovered, and the dog was rewarded properly for what she truly did. The master of the house turns out to be a scientist, and while his family is away on an extended vacation, he and his friends decide to do an experiment on Aileen’s puppy. Sadly, this ends in tragedy.

Twain does a great job of making us, his readers, empathize with the dog writing this story. We can feel the respect she has for her mother, the love she has for her owners, and her adoration of her puppy. This book will take you out of your problems and transport you back in time.
