Description

Chamber Music is a book of various verses composed by James Joyce, first issued in May of 1907. The selection is primarily consisted of 34 verses about love, but two more verses were included before printing (“All day I hear the noise of waters” and “I hear an army charging upon the land”).

Though the rhymes were not that successful, they got a few critical praises. Ezra Pound adored the “delicate temperament” of these premier verses, while Yeats defined “I hear an army charging upon the land” as “a technical and emotional masterpiece”. In 1909, Joyce corresponded to his wife, “When I wrote [Chamber Music], I was a lonely boy, walking about by myself at night and thinking that one day a girl would love me.”

James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was an Irish author, short story writer, and poet. He interposed to the modernist avant-garde and is considered as among the highly instrumental and leading novelists of the 20th century.

James is well known for Ulysses in 1922, a historic novel in which the sections of Homer’s Odyssey are analogous in a range of literary kinds, probably much notable stream of consciousness. Other popular writings are the short tale compilation Dubliners in 1914, and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in 1916 and Finnegans Wake in 1939. His other works are the three volumes of verses, a drama, random journalism and his printed correspondences.

He was born in Brighton Square, Rathgar, Dublin, around half a mile from his mother’s home town in Terenure, into a bourgeois family going haywire. An intelligent pupil, he shortly studied at Christian Brothers-run O’Connell School before advancing at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, in spite of the unruly family life inflicted by his father’s drinking and impulsive finances. He continued to study at the University College Dublin.
