Anne Askew was a British poet and Protestant who was convicted as a heretic. She is the only woman known on historical record to have been physically persecuted in the London Tower and burned to death at the stake. She is among the earliest female poets to write in the English language and the first British woman to file a divorce as she was the innocent party.

Anne Askew was born in Lincolnshire, England. Her father was William Askew, a rich landlord, he was a gentleman in the court of King Henry VIII and he was also a juror.

She was a devout Protestant and read the Bible and memorize the verses. She was dedicated to her faith for the rest of her life. Unluckily, her husband Thomas Kyme was a Catholic, and their marriage turned out to be rough. They had two children and later on Thomas kicked her out because he could not stand her protestant wife. With that, Anne filed a divorce for her husband’s cruelty.

After which, she settled in London where she joined other Protestants and studied the Bible with them. She got rid of her husband’s name and used her given name Anne Askew. She became a preacher or gospeler during her stay in London.
