Andre Norton’s Storm Over Warlock is an enchanting, well-written and quite exciting science fiction fantasy story centered around a theme that’s very similar to Lord of Thunder and Plague Ship – two of Norton’s other outstanding sci-fi publications. The story is not what you’d normally expect from classic sci-fi, revolving entirely around the inexperienced Lantee – its main protagonist – and his quest for survival as the last remaining human on a strange alien planet.

The Tharg are one of Norton’s most intriguing creations, an alien race so strange and aggressive that humans were never able to communicate with them. The author manages to paint a very vivid and at times intense dynamic picture of a planet that features mysteries beyond the imagination of sci-fi enthusiasts and even many of the most prominent writers of her time. The main protagonist is also quite a complex figure that learns and evolves as the story progresses.

Also, unlike many sci-fi novels that might grant readers pauses, there is never really a dull moment in Storm Over Warlock, the title being quite descriptive and clear.
