An Old Knight’s Tale In Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sir Nigel

While Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle is better known for Sherlock Holmes and his other popular fictional stories, Sir Nigel is yet another example of an excellently narrated plot about a knight in the time of the Hundred Years’ War.

The story of Sir Nigel is loosely based on the life of the historical knight Neil Loring who managed to make himself remarked during the war that spanned a hundred years.

The family of Loring is going through tough times. The Black Death has decimated the family and its fortunes while the monks of the Waverley Abbey are trying to take every last bit of land and the home of the family. Young Nigel is the only member left and he struggles with keeping his legacy.

Fortune of Nigel, King Edward III of England comes to stay in his manor and so he pledges the king to take him into his service. He agrees, and Nigel is made a squire to Sir John Chandos. Before leaving Nigel swears to perform three deeds of honor in order to become worthy of asking for the hand of Lady Mary.

Sir Nigel earns a reputation due to his heroic actions and military achievements. He manages to single-handedly capture a spy that had important information about the English army only to suffer grave wounds. He sets sail and meets a Spaniard fleet which he, along with his comrades manages to defeat. He also manages to rescue an English army that had been captured by La Brohiniere, a baron nicknamed the Butcher.

The story unfolds as Nigel becomes more and more appreciated by King Edward and he eventually manages to perform the three deeds of honor, marry Lady Mary and he is also made a knight by the King Himself.

People interested in fiction based on history as well as others appreciative of a good read or especially of Arthur Conan Doyle’s style will definitely enjoy reading Sir Nigel.
