Dostoyevsky,the Russian master of stories about the human soul, never ceases to shake and astonish the reader. Most readers may know Dostoyevsky as a novelist, but his short stories also deserve attention, each of them revealing the many layers of human nature in a moving and realistic manner.

Dostoyevsky wrote 17 short stories, out of which nine are included in this collection – some satiric, some sad, but all of them touching and excellently written. The first one is entitled An Honest Thief and it tells the story of an old drunk admitting to have committed a theft on his death bed. The second story in the line is entitled A Novel In Nine Letters is about a friendship harmed by money,followed by An Unpleasant Predicament,a story that discusses the difference about what one might think of oneself and reality. Another Man’s Wife,the next story, combines two of Dostoyevsky’s previous pieces and tells a vaudeville-like story.

The other stories in the book are not less exciting: The Heavenly Christmas Tree is a classic of the genre and a story about an orphan boy who is pushed away by everyone around him;The Peasant Marey is about the childhood memories of a Polish prisoner in a camp;The Crocodile is a surrealistic story about a man swallowed alive by a crocodile and about his experiences of the calm environment inside the beast’s belly;Bobok is about a man who hears the conversation of the dead in a cemetery, while the last story,The Dream of a Ridiculous Manis told by a man who wants to commit suicide, but falls asleep instead, having a vivid and eventful dream about what Earth was like before everyone learned how to lie and later waking a changed man who decides to dedicate his life to helping others and to being kind.

All in all, a collection surely worth your time, especially if you are fond of Russian literature.
