P.G. Wodehouse was one of the most widely read humorists of the 20th century. He managed to create many caricatured characters that have appeared in many of his works. While he managed to spread the popularity of characters such as Lord Emsworth, the simple-minded Bertie Wooster and his valet Jeeves, his Selected Short Stories draws upon less known characters who are just as relevant to his stories.

Wodehouse has been a sharp critic of social “values” such as corporate greed, hypocrysy and other qualities that abounded during his time. His made his constant attacks by creating caricatures of lords, valets, princes, chancellors and other political and social figures that were representing the crème de la crème. This is what makes all of his novels and short stories just as relevant today as they were one hundred years ago.

Wodehouse was a prolific author and by the time of his death he was working on his 97th novel. That is an incredible feat, considering that he would spend as much as two years creating a plot for a novel. He would first write up to four hundred pages where he outline the lot and only then did he start to add characters and dialogue. Once he responded, when being asked by a journalist, that he found creating a consistent plot very hard. He was meticulous into checking that the plot had no holes, and this can be seen even in his extensive novels.

Selected Short Stories compiles a few of his less popular works such as The Man Upstairs, Deep Waters and by Advice of Counsel. These stories are mostly concerning love and romance, but being a Wodehouse creation, you can bet that they are as humorous as a work of fiction can be.
