Thomas Nelson Page was a well-known American writer and attorney who had a fair deal of diverse pursuits and achievements in his life. While his success as an accomplished legal practitioner and his involvement in international politics are certainly noteworthy, Page’s writing skills were particularly well-received in the literary community. His style, closely associated with postbellum fiction and a nostalgic vision of America thriving with Southern values, is also closely tied in with Santa Claus’s Partner, a quite successful novel that Nelson penned as early as 1899.

Although very similar to Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Santa Claus’s Partner takes a slightly different avenue when it comes to style and presentation, while the story itself introduces a few unique elements as well, making it well worth reading by anyone who may be interested in a heartfelt, beautiful story about kindness.

The story is about a Mr. Livingstone who reached a remarkable level of financial success in his life. Finally being worth 7 figures, he becomes wary and begins to seek a higher level of meaning and purpose in his life – that, aside from financial fulfillment, has been somewhat lacking in many other aspects.

This is where Santa Claus’s “partner” comes in, the young daughter of Livingstone’s clerk, who agrees to help him distribute gifts to orphan children. His last gift, however,is one that may end up changing her life and her family’s to a significant extent.

The story itself is not a new one, but the elegant, insightful and sweet manner in which Page approaches and develops the plot, as well as the gradual but clear transformations thatthe main character goes through, are all well worth the small time investment associated with reading this beautiful, short book.
