Description

Alice B. Emerson was the pseudonym of three authors responsible for writing the 30 volumes belonging to the Ruth Fielding series. A Stratemeyer project, the book series was written by W. Bert Foster, Elizabeth M. Duffield Ward and Mildred A. Wirt Benson in a 21-year time span, from 1913 too 1934. Stories such as Ruth Fielding on Cliff Island, Ruth Fielding at Snow Camp and several other volumes of the series are still very much loved by children today.

What sets Ruth Fielding apart from many of the other highly popular children’s tales produced through the Stratemeyer Syndicate was the remarkable influence it had in inspiring later works such as the Nancy Drew series. Like Nancy Drew, Ruth Fielding is an opinionated and confident young girl convinced that she can make her own way in life. Also, similarly to the Dana Girls, Ruth attends a boarding school.

Ruth Fielding of the Red Mill is the first original tale of the series, where we meet Ruth, and are acquainted with her condition. A recently-orphaned girl, she has to be content to live with her Aunt Alvirah Boggs and Uncle Jabez Potter in Cheslow, New York. Neither her aunt nor her uncle approve of Ruth’s plans of completing her higher education and attempting to make it as a singer.

Ruth’s agreeable personality and her kindness toward Mercy Curtis, a disabled girl with a negative disposition, plays an important role in helping her find a way to softening the hearts of those around her and, ultimately, aiming much higher in life than the odds would seem to permit.

This beautiful and inspiring story for children has many hidden meanings and lessons that your young ones can relate to through a delightful tale of friendship and overcoming adversity. Ruth’s strength and her kind and cheerful disposition are in the center spotlight of the book, helping her solve all her problems with ease.
