Run to Earth is a 500-page long, intricate and extremely well-written example of a Sensationalist Victorian novel written by one of the best authors of Victorian literature from the middle and end of the 19th century. Mary Elizabeth Braddon is a British novelist, playwright and poet best known for writing Lady Audley’s Secret – one of the most famous sensation novels ever written, published in 1862. In Run to Earth, Braddon manages to create an equally fascinating plot that has caused some readers to claim they enjoyed it better than any other literary works created by the illustrious author.

In Run to Earth, we are presented to three distinguishable layers of the well-woven narrative built by Braddon. The first has to do with a murder, while the other two are more closely connected to the details and dramatic chains of events in the lives of George Jernam and Rosamund, as well as Sir Oswald and his family history.

The book reveals a great deal of intricate, invaluable details about Victorian society that most authors in the period were either incapable of, or unwilling to display. Braddon, however, masterfully blends some fascinating and complex characters into her plot, worth every second of reading.

In Run to Earth, we learn about the despicable nature of Victor Carrington, the curious qualities of Black Milsom and fascinating characters such as Lydia Graham. The latter is a classic example of a relentless woman desperate to find her place while struggling through the harsh realities of Victorian society – by struggling with being unloved since her youth, and seeking to marry a wealthy gentleman.

Of course, as with every sensationalist Victorian novel, in Run to Earth evildoers are doomed from the start, while the heroes and heroines of the novel are eventually able to prevail, but not without a certain degree of scarring.
