Description

The two ancient Indian epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana are some of the most impressive narratives of the ancient world. Far longer in length than Homer’s Iliad, they depict a world of gods and demons, both symbolic and highly sacred as part of the Hindu culture.

Valmiki wrote the Ramayan more than two millennia ago, the time period attributed to the text being set between the 5th century BC and the 1st century BC. Made up of seven books, or cantos, and more than 480,000 words in total, the epic poem is the narration of Rama’s struggle to save his beloved wife, Sita, who was abducted by the demon king Ravana. Throughout the tale Ravana tries to force Sita to marry him, however, there are attempts to thwart his plans at every stage.

One of those stages is depicted by this book, considered by many to be the heart of the Ramayan. Also known as the Sundara Kanda, it contains the story of Hanuman, a strong and ardent devotee of Rama, who sets out on his own perilous journey traveling to Lanka alone to face the demons and rescue Sita. Throughout his journey, danger lies on every step, and Hanuman has to prove his worth by facing various obstacles seeking to stop him from fulfilling his path, including the demon Lankini, whom he has to get past in order to enter the protected Lanka, where Sita is being held.

The story contains many remarkable lessons of wisdom and truth that are hidden between its words and pages in an elegant and intricate fashion that only the sage Valmiki could have thought of. Valmiki is not only revered as the writer of the sacred text, but also as a contemporary of Rama himself, believed to have met Rama during his period of exile and given sanctuary to his wife, Sita, when she was banished.
