Description

Frank R. Stockton was a well-known writer of children’s novels in the early 1900s, some of his more significant and popular novels including amusing novels such as Rudder Grange, Adventures of Captain Horne or The Lady and the Tiger. Pomona’s Travels is closely linked to his most prolific novel, Rudder Grange, with the main heroine, a young girl by the name of Pomona, along with Jonas – who was not much older than her – travel together to England and Scotland, and recount their adventures to Pomona’s former mistress through a series of letters.

With his usual approach of writing stories that are full of life and highly engaging, Stockton manages to captivate his young audience by presenting Pomona as the same young and adventuresome girl she appeared to be in Rudder Grange, although now she is somewhat more mature and well-rounded.

Her and Jonas’ travels will take the reader through a fantastic new world where Pomona manages to visit a host of hotels – both large and small – tangle with wild pigs, attending a stag hunt, and even being witness to an actual knighting.

Pomona’s unorthodox adventures are as thrilling as they are amusing, and most children will be more than happy to go through them, exploring the wonders that Stockton’s version of the rediscovered British Isles have to offer, with England and Scotland being repainted as exciting places that never cease to amaze their visitors through new and interesting events that are sure to keep the young girl’s former mistress fascinated, as she reads through Pomona’s letters.

You will find the book to be a balanced mix of engaging storytelling and fascinating encounters that challenge children’s young minds and make them think harder, while keeping the storyline simple and current, even 100 years after its inception – all while showing off Pomona’s colorful and hilarious personality that will likely keep your kids grinning throughout the read.
