Author of the classic Little Fuzzy, and his extensive Terro-Human Future History series, H. Beam Piper was an illustrious and highly skilled author of science fiction literature who created many unbelievable and highly creative stories and novels throughout his career. Police Operation is part of Puper’s Paratime tales about alternate realities, a series consisting of several stories, a novel and a novella (Police Operation) that follow the adventures and escapades associated with an advanced civilization that found the secret of jumping to alternate timelines.

The concept of time travel and traveling through alternate timelines diverging from an original point was still a very new one at the time when Piper penned this book, and it still isn’t fully agreed upon by many science fiction enthusiasts today. The story in Police Operation, however, is based heavily on it, and includes many elements and storytelling artifices introduced by Piper that are quite ahead of their time – such as the author telling us what the main protagonist sees, but without yet allowing the reader to witness his thoughts or the full background of the story for the time being.

Police Operation is the second story in the Paratime series. Whereas the first (He Walked Around the Horses) was quite vague and included very few details about the Paratime universe, this one more than makes up for the lack.

Police Operation pieces together the puzzle left behind by its predecessor, and introduces us to an advanced world where people are given the chance to interact, trade technology with, and even live among the communities they encounter in other timelines, as long as they don’t interfere with their development. The story is quite compelling, as are the characters, who often make decisions on their own and display complex, unpredictable behavior.
