Many of Emily Dickinson’s almost 1,800 poems were only published after her death. Despite their visionary quality and outstanding simplicity, like many other poets before her and those that would follow, Dickinson was unable to obtain the recognition she deserved from the society of her time. Many still saw her remarkable potential, including her first mentor, a young attorney named Benjamin Franklin Newton, and literary critic and ex-minister, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, who corresponded with Dickinson until her death.

Emily Dickinson’s poems follow a simple structure that rarely even adds a name. Instead, most of her poems have numbers, and are presented in half rhyme, as well as featuring unusual punctuation. This structure, seen as obscure by some of her contemporaries, was equally difficult to catch on at the time as were the themes that she explored, which mainly focused on the topics of death and immortality, and her straightforward style.

Her ability to turn language into a modern form of art has since been an inspiration to many poets and writers throughout the past 150 years.

Her timeless poetry became increasingly more popular after her death, and even today, contemporary critics and accomplished poets place her at the top of the pyramid as one of the most deeply inspired American poets who ever lived.
