Mary E. Burt published Poems Every Child Should Know, an eclectic collection of poems, in the hope that children would read and commit the poems to memory. She believed poetry was food for the soul and music for the spirit. An educator, Burt chose short poems, suitable for children to memorize, that both boys and girls would enjoy. Over the past decade, thousands of children have sat mesmerized by the imaginative powers of the verses contained in this collection.

The collection is divided into six progressive sections; each section contains more challenging poetry.

The first section, entitled The Budding Moments, contains delightful verses for the young children. Included in this section are poems like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Wynken, Blynken, and Nod, The Boy Who Never Told a Lie, and The Star Spangled Banner.

The second section, entitled The Little Child, includes poems like Song of Life, The Noble Nature, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, and To a Mouse.
