Description

As the son of a Bishop, American author and editor Mark Antony de Wolfe Howe is perhaps one of the most appropriate individuals that could have been tasked to write the biography of one of the 19th century’s most influential and loved clergymen – Phillips Brooks (1835 – 1893). Brooks was a man of tremendous wisdom and understanding, and his compassion, as well as his powerful words, have touched the minds and hearts of many during and after the American Civil War.

Most of Brooks’ life was spent in Boston, where he was appointed as rector of the Trinity Church. His great moral stature has contributed to Brooks becoming one of the most passionate and loved preachers in the entire country, and his actions to oppose slavery and side with the North during the Civil War showed much of his strength of character through both his words and actions. Also a man of remarkable physical stature measuring 6’4” in height, Phillips Brooks was an imposing character who was not easy to ignore even by the most fervent and determined of his opponents. Near the end of his life, he was also named Episcopal Bishop of Massachusetts – between 1891 and the time of his death in 1893.

His sermon at the death of Abraham Lincoln is considered one of the strongest and uplifting displays, and still stands as an inspiring text that conveys much about the admirable character of both men. Later in his life, Brooks was appointed full-time chaplain at Harvard University. Even though he died unmarried, his true family were the professors and students at Harvard, who, at the time of his death, offered him one of the most distinguished burials in the history of Boston.

A comprehensive and well-written biographical work that offers a balanced view of Phillips Brooks as a man, academic achiever, preacher and clergyman, the book is an inspiring account of the life of a man who remains to this day one of Boston’s most important historical figures.
