We are also introduced to the clever Jed Cochrane, a television producer who may give humanity the means to its salvation using his showbiz skills to fun the interstellar journey.

Surprisingly well-developed for a book written in the 1950s, Operation: Outer Space will offer far more than you’ve bargained for. Leinster’s unique and dynamic writing style will quickly draw you in, while the mismatched crew of the shuttle, together with the main character himself, will give you plenty of great reasons to enjoy the flow of the story.

Some of Leinster’s views on human development and the mostly unnatural turn that the mass media and the wealthier side of Earth’s population has taken are channeled through Jed Cochrane. His own feelings of uncertainty and worry about the planet and its inhabitants reflect what very few people knew at the beginning of the 1950s, but what Leinster very eloquently pointed out: that in the future, we either have to learn to work hard for the betterment of the planet, or start looking for a new home.
