Obadiah

Description

Originally published at the turn of the 20th century, in 1900, the Standard American Version of the Bible contains a completely revised translation of the original scriptures, with emphasis on making them clearer and more approachable by its English-speaking readership. The Book of Obadiah, Standard American Version, is part of this translation, and contains the shortest Book of the Bible, spanning over a single chapter.

The Book of Obadiah is said to have been authored by a minor prophet by the name of Obadiah – meaning “servant of the Lord” – who foretold the complete destruction of Edom and the restoration of God’s chosen people of Israel.

According to Obadiah, the Lord retaliated against the people of Edom because of their unwillingness to render their assistance when Israel was attacked. The prophecy spoke of the destruction of Edom as being worse than the one caused by thieves in the night, since even thieves would still leave something standing after they finish.

In the second part of the Book, we also learn of the Lord’s promise to Israel, which would eventually be restored and made to become a holy place, revered by many. Returning from exile, the people of Israel would take over the lands of Edom after no survivors will be left among the Edomites, and the Lord would become King over all the lands and mountains that once belonged to Edom.

Although there are only a few differences between the American Standard Version and other versions of the Book of Obadiah, the clarity and the easier to understand words of the American Standard Version will make reading the book a much easier and more fulfilling experience.
