There have been many spin-off, books, movies and re-adaptations based on Lewis Carroll’s original Alice books. However, none were as eloquent and true to the atmosphere of Alice’s Wonderland adventures as the New Adventures of Alice written by John Rae.

This book recreates the vivid and beautiful world of fantasy that Carroll first thought of, and does so in a masterful way. Rae’s style may be slightly different, reminding us of Baum’s Oz books, and presenting a faster pace to the plot line; however, you’ll find it remarkably well-designed and worthy to be called a faithful continuation of the original story.

Without changing too much about the approach to the story itself, Rae begins by introducing us to a new character named Betsy. As she finds herself wishing for a new Alice book, she falls asleep and stumbles upon a book in her dream that sees herself as Alice enjoying the stories of Mother Goose together with her cat. Further adventures ensue, as we are taken into Mother Goose’s stories. Accompanied by Alice, we meet brand new characters like the Poet and the Snipe, who add a new and exciting spin to the original tale, and have their own unique adventures as well.

Rae’s characters are reminiscent in some ways of Carroll’s original Mad Hatter and other fascinating protagonists that we all know and love. However, Rae brings something new through a story that merges the Mother Goose and Alice in Wonderland universes.

Whether you’ve grown up reading and re-reading the Alice books, or you are more of a fan of Mother Goose, this delightful book will take you on an adventure that will make you never want to stop reading. The dynamic tale, lively characters and surprisingly genuine nonsensical approach mimicking Lewis Carroll’s original style will all undoubtedly contribute to a brilliant pastime reading the New Adventures of Alice.
