Description
Murder in the Sacristy, written by Daniel A. Lord, is unique in the oeuvre of the author and an exciting read from the first page to the last. The setting for the story is also well-chosen and complex – Chicago before World War II, the setting that Lord knows the most, having been born and raised there. The classic murder mystery starts with the discovery of a dead body in a sacristy, followed by another shocking discovery: the valuable jewels that have been kept in the safe are missing. Every evidence points towards the priest of the sacristy, but as it is to be expected of a well-written mystery story, the investigation must continue to find the real culprit. Daniel A. Lord is known not only as the most famous Jesuit priest in Chicago, but also as a prolific writer who ventured into many different genres such as drama and he used many other forms of mass media to communicate his faith. He wrote numerous articles and pamphlets, most of them geared towards young readers and bearing titles that were meant to capture the reader’s attention and he has one more full-length novel, too. For a while, he taught English at St. Louis University; then, in 1923, he became ordained as a priest and dedicated his life to popularizing the Catholic religion and to the solidarity movement. He also worked as an editor for the magazine of the movement, entitled The Queen’s Work, but perhaps what he became the most famous for was his crusade-like fight against film and Hollywood, in particular. He became widely known as the priest who drafted the Production Code for Motion Pictures, the code that incorporated the moral guidelines applicable in the film industry and that was observed by all motion pictures released by the major studios between 1930 and 1968.
