Description

Gertrude Franklin Horn Atherton was one of the most prolific female American authors of her time, responsible for bestsellers such as The Doomswoman, American Wives and English Husbands, or Black Oxen – a book that was also made into a successful silent movie in 1923.

The main themes she explored through her writing were, for the most part, tied in to feminism, politics, social matters and war. Her remarkable novels, short stories, and even newspaper articles written for several influential magazines at the turn of the 20th century remain to this day highly sought out and recognized as truly valuable works of literature.

The book presented here is the story of a tenacious, strong and influential woman by the name of Enid Belfame. Enid is known as a highly respectable and virtuous woman – 42 years of age – whose husband, however, was murdered. Despite being a reputable town dignitary and the founder of The Friday Club, Enid quickly becomes prime suspect and faces the harshest form of justice.

The irony is that the woman actually wanted to murder her husband, but before she could even find out whether or not she would be capable of the deed, and as a result of an unusual twist of fate, she instead becomes a witness to the crime she didn’t commit. Can her friends and family help her through the ordeal? And what does the young and handsome Mr. Dwight Rush have to gain from the entire matter?

Similar to many other of her books, Gertrude Atherton’s Mrs. Balfame centers on strong and decisive characters, the most intense of which is Enid herself. The plot is expanded through unexpected twists activated at just the right time to push the reader through a veritable roller coaster of intrigues. Fans of Atherton’s powerful novels and those who love a good mystery will thoroughly enjoy the delightful reading experience brought by Mrs. Balfame.
