Gertrude Franklin Horn Atherton was one of the most prolific female American authors of her time, responsible for bestsellers such as The Doomswoman, American Wives and English Husbands, or Black Oxen – a book that was also made into a successful silent movie in 1923.

Similar to many other of her books, Gertrude Atherton’s Mrs. Balfame centers on strong and decisive characters, the most intense of which is Enid herself. The plot is expanded through unexpected twists activated at just the right time to push the reader through a veritable roller coaster of intrigues.
