Follow Mr. Midshipman Easy In The Times Of The Golden Age Of Sail

People looking for an insight into the world of sailing in the 19th century, back when it was in its full glory, will surely love Frederick Marryat’s account of the beloved character Midshipman Easy. The novel goes on to tell the stories of young Easy as he gets into scrapes and argues about morals with everyone he meets.

Frederick Marryat was a noted British Royal Navy officer and a dear friend of Charles Dickens. He also was among the pioneers of the sea story genre, and Mr. Midshipman Easy is perhaps among the finest works of the time. The novel seems to be a semi-autobiographical novel that might be more than just about sea adventures.

Easy has foolish parents and he is spoiled into believing that all people are equal in the world. His father thinks that all men have their share of the earth and that equality is every human being’s right. Easy adopts this philosophy and, upon his signing up in the British Navy, he starts arguing with just about everyone he meets about his views. He eventually meets a lower deck seaman called Mesty or Mephistopheles, who was a former African prince and now an escaped slave.

During their adventures, both Easy and Mesty become officers and they start changing their view over the world. Eventually, Easy gets back home and throws out everyone living in his home not paying rent except for his parents and then he gets his own ship to set sail towards Sicily to claim his woman.

Mr. Midshipman Easy is more than a sea story as it delves into the realm of philosophy where the author is caught between equality and imperialism. Readers will have more to chew on after reading Mr. Midshipman Easy, while also diving into the crazy adventures of young Easy.
