Description

Wilkie Collins’ name is associated with many well-known works of literary art that have remained popular throughout the past decades. Among them are The Woman in White, The Moonstone and No Name. While Miss or Mrs? is not among his best known works, many consider it to be quite an interesting and entertaining novel that very much grows on you as you keep on reading it.

The plot of the novel talks about a young, 15-year old girl whose father wants to force her into an arranged marriage with a 38-year old sea captain. The captain covets the girl, and wants the marriage to take place as soon as possible, despite the fact that she wants nothing to do with the whole business.

On the other hand, the girl finds a much better suitor in her cousin. Only about 20 years of age, he is willing to marry her, but the union has to remain a secret for another month, before the girl actually turns 15. In the meantime, she is left with her father, and the sea captain, facing serious financial difficulties, plans a more nefarious plot to get the girl and the dowry.

The novel may be quite slow in the beginning, but as you will find, it picks up the pace later on. In a manner very much typical to the writing style of Wilkie Collins, the book begins to show accelerated progress quite seamlessly, and before you know it, the plot is thrown around through changes and an action-packed scenario that will keep you eager to see where it’s all going.

You will find the last third of the book to be well worth reading, and the patience you have shown reading the slower parts of the novel will definitely be rewarded with an exciting ending that will take every reader by surprise.
